  1. International relief agency founded by the
  2. Geneva Convention 1864 at the instigation of
  3. the Swiss doctor Henri Dunant to assist the
  4. wounded and prisoners in war. Its symbol is a
  5. symmetrical red cross on a white ground. In
  6. addition to dealing with associated problems
  7. of war, such as refugees and the care of the
  8. disabled, the Red Cross is increasingly
  9. concerned with victims of natural disasters -
  10. floods, earthquakes, epidemics, and
  11. accidents. Prompted by war horrors described
  12. by Dunant, the Geneva Convention laid down
  13. principles to ensure the safety of
  14. ambulances, hospitals, stores, and personnel
  15. distinguished by the Red Cross emblem. The
  16. Muslim equivalent is the Red Crescent. The
  17. British Red Cross Society was founded 1870,
  18. and incorporated 1908. It works in close
  19. association with the St John Ambulance
  20. Association. The US National Red Cross was
  21. founded 1881.
